Yesterday a 16-year-old friend rose out of the baptismal water, symbolizing the new life she has in Christ. When I intercede for this young woman, I pray the inspired words of Paul: “…asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God…” (Colossians 1:9, 10).
Think about this young woman for a minute. She is 16 years old. She lives in a godless and evil culture. How can this young woman walk in a manner worthy of the Lord?
Think about the numerous choices that face her. What will her vocation be? Will she marry? Whom shall she marry? How does she make this choice? Will she do further study? What kind of friends will she have? What kind of influence will she allow other people to have on her? How will she go about this?
What other influences will she have in her life? How much will she let the (social) media and entertainment world affect her thinking?
Sources of Wisdom
She needs wisdom that none of us have in ourselves, so how does she go about getting this wisdom? When I first thought about this, a number of things came to mind. My first thought was that she should read scripture because that is the only place where she can know God’s will. In addition to this, she has the regular gatherings of the church, prayer and the advice of more mature believers who can guide her in her choices.
These are all good things. Yet, they miss true wisdom. What do I mean by this? These are all good activities that she can engage in. True wisdom is found in Christ himself. In Colossians 2:3, Paul teaches that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in him. It is through a living relationship with him that she will be wisely guided as she goes through life.
Christ our Wisdom
How do we live in a wise way? We live in a wise way through Christ, in whom are the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. He wisely guides us. He speaks to us through the pages of scripture. He can speak to us while we are gathered with other believers, while we pray and through the advice of others. He is the living source of all wisdom.
