The answer is the same for us as it is for true orphans of this world who start life, for whatever reason, without parents: We belong to God. Created in His image, we are His. He determines everything that happens in our lives, and the timing of it.

I believe one of the reasons God created friendship was so that we could help each other. If one of us falls down, the other can help her up. This is true in the literal sense, as well as in the spiritual sense. If my friend falls into unbelief, hopelessness, fear, or any of the other troubles that plague us as humans, I can help her up as she opens her heart to me for encouragement and discipleship.

Most of us are familiar with this quote from Matthew 5. It is one of the beatitudes, and was part of Christ’s teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. He is telling us that if we are merciful toward others, we also will obtain mercy from God.
