Individuals who suffer from chronic pain must learn to cope with the loss of the life that they’d thought would be. Jane, for instance, will not sail into her retirement years crocheting and sewing for her grandchildren, as she’d thought she would. Needlework and crafting gave her a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction, and in some ways were a part of her identity. Dealing with chronic pain is, in this sense, like a death: The person you thought you were; the person you planned to be, at least in this sense, has died. Counselees with chronic pain or disability often wrestle with the question, “Who am I now? Now that I can’t do the things that I’m most known for doing, who am I, and what purpose do I serve now? “

My goal as we study these passages is for her to begin to get a glimpse of where her hope really is—not in wellness, pain relief or a return to “normal,” but in the precious blood of Jesus Christ; His work in her heart; and the glory that He says will outweigh all her pain.

Embracing a loss requires a decision on my part. I must decide in my heart that I believe God when He says He knows what’s best for me (Jeremiah 29:11), and that He will see me through it (Proverbs 3:5-6).

My friend shows the difference that a supernatural work of the Lord makes on a person’s heart and how that is expressed mentally, physically, and relationally. In contrast to the paralysis that comes from living in hurt, she experienced the Lord giving purpose and life as she lived each day for His glory.
