How forgetful are you? This past week I’ve struggled with my memory. I’m usually on top of things, but whether it’s age, over-commitment, stress or living too much in the moment…this has not been a good week. I won’t bore you with the details. You can put your own forgetful episode in its place. What I found interesting was my frantic effort to find someone else to blame. If only someone had reminded me. If only I hadn’t been so busy with all the other things in my life. If only the unexpected events hadn’t happened. If only… When I was finally done trying to justify my forgetfulness and shift the blame to someone else I did it again. Twice in one week! Really?! This time I didn’t go through the blame shifting or the …if onlys. I took a step back and remembered I am frail and imperfect. I also remembered I know a great God who doesn’t forget. I can count on Him to always remember.
In Luke 12:6-7 Jesus spoke these words to the multitude. “Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? And yet not one of them is forgotten before God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
And so as I start a new week I am thankful for a God who allowed me to forget so I could remember that He never forgets.
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;” Isaiah 49:15-16a
